Using the Concept of Backstory to Mine Riches

A backstory refers to the history or background information that provides context to a character, event, or situation. It is often used in storytelling, whether in books, movies, television shows, or other forms of narrative, to explain how things came to be or what shaped the present circumstances.

The backstory can include:

  1. Character Backstory: This details the past experiences, motivations, relationships, and events that have shaped a character’s personality, values, or actions. For example, a character may have a tragic childhood that influences their behavior as an adult.
  2. Event Backstory: This describes the events leading up to a particular moment in the story. For example, a conflict in a story might have roots in historical events or decisions made before the main plot begins.
  3. Setting Backstory: The history or context of the world or environment where the story takes place, which can include its culture, politics, or previous events that affect the current story.

In summary, a backstory helps deepen the understanding of the present narrative by revealing important details from the past and hint at the future. It adds complexity to characters and plots, often creating emotional depth or providing explanations for current actions or situations.

So that’s what the rest of the world does with backstory but we’re doing something a little different.

How We Use Backstory

We want to identify the broader market we’re in.  Then we want to identify the sub-niches and etc.  By doing this we create a map – a map of opportunity that will show you where to go next with your subscribers.  It will also make you aware of opportunities as an affiliate.  This is super powerful.  Do it!

Backstory . . .

  • Gives an overview of the market
  • Helps predict what else your subscribers may want
  • Helps in identifying a niche
  • Helps to identify opportunities
  • Helps with targeting traffic

In the dynamic world of email marketing, understanding your audience is key to unlocking their potential. Just as a compelling backstory enriches a narrative, knowing the intricacies of your market can transform your approach. By dissecting your audience’s needs, interests and preferences, you can tailor your messages to resonate deeply, fostering loyalty and engagement.

This journey of discovery doesn’t just stop at demographics; it extends into the emotional triggers that drive your subscribers. Dive into the nuances of their desires and pain points, and you’ll uncover a treasure trove of opportunities. Embrace this exploration, and watch as your tiny lists evolve into a powerful force for big profits.

Self Sufficiency Backstory

Self-Sufficieny Backstory

This second map looks at the Self Sufficiency market with sub-niches including food, animals, heating and cooling, land, and income generation.  Having sought a self sufficient life these are the big ones to me.

From there we can break each sub-niche down further.  For example “food” breaks down to Storage and Preservation, Food Co-ops and Gardening (not a complete list but good for our example).

As you can see in the image gardening includes till and no till methods, of which we have two niches we could focus on.  A conventional gardener may not be our target but anyone into “Back to Eden” gardening might be spot on.

We could certainly put more time and effort into this map, and if we did the market would become more clear.  As it is we can see the broader market, how it fits together (and doesn’t), and predict what else our people may need.

We can see from the math that land is a need and therefore the ultimate dream for most is a 5+ acre plot of land.  You may not have thought of that if you’re selling wildflower seeds to gardeners.

On the subject of mind maps if you don’t already have a software program then you need to try Mindomo.  Horrible affiliate program but a very cool tool that runs in your browser so it goes where you go.
